Jesus said: Blessed are the peacemakers, they shall be called the children of God! Because of these and other words Christians should actively work for peace.
VI Why Christians should work for peace:
1. We are responsible to our Creator.
The will of God is the most important peace factor in this world. God wants men to live in fellowship and reconciliation. He cares for all mankind. To work for peace is to work to realise the good will of God for mankind and the world God has created. Christians may join forces with everybody that work for peace and righteousness in this world.
2. Salvation and peace.
The Christians take Christ as their example in bringing peace to this world. They are motivated by their faith in the atonement of Jesus Christ and his death on the cross where he conquered evil and they believe in the promise of ultimate peace. Christ has given his people a ministry of reconciliation in salvation.
War is a result of injustice, greed, envy – sin. To work for peace is to work to remove and change the unworthy and suppressing circumstances in which people live and suffer and are being offended as God’s creations. The question of war and peace is linked with: hunger, starvation, injustice, exploitation, righteousness, dignity, human rights, distribution of goods and utilisation of common resources.
Man’s greatest sin is self interest on the cost of our neighbour and God. Christians believe that we are created to love, care and show goodness to one another. Christ is our example. In his act of salvation he is restoring men to right relationship with God and one another. He came to bridge the gap between men, to tear down the dividing wall and bring reconciliation and peace.
3. Christians are called to be peace makers.
The NT shows us that the Christians are called to realise the peace of God in this world. The life-principle of the Christians are to love as Christ loved, he died for us when we were enemies. The attitude of the Christian is one of peace and not of war. The Christians are called to be peacemakers. We are called to pray for peace, work for peace and demonstrate peace. Christians that live propheticly will give people in the world hope, they will bring peace on earth and good will towards men!
4. An all-embracing concept of peace.
Peace is more than absence of war. Peace is linked with justice, righteousness, freedom, development of creativity and activity for the good of the present and coming generations. In large parts of the world we find a peace without freedom and righteousness. The struggle for human rights and a just distribution of the world’s resources and the work for peace and disarmament are two sides of the same coin.
6. The limits of war.
It is becoming clearer and clearer that in our age it is impossible to say that any form of war is absolute legitimate or just. The different types of weapons with their devastating effects and the increased rearmament show us that war is an increasingly evil thing. Christians should work on all levels in society to stop this evil and make use of war as a remedy to solve conflicts impossible.
The new nuclear weapons threatens the balance in the whole earth and are a serious threat to mankind. A nuclear war may not be limited and will mean the extinction of all human life in large areas. The radioactive radiation will create horrible after-effects and even damage the inherited genes of the survivors. To use weapons like that is to destroy the creation of God. We should make it known to all in charge of nuclear weapons that it is against the will of God to use them, and that God will destroy them that destroy the earth in this way. Use of nuclear weapon can never be justified.
6. Disarmament
A whole world lives in fear of nuclear weapons for mass extinction being used in a coming war. The anxiety for the future is in it self a disaster for humanity and involve great ethical problems. Mankind must be set free from fear of a nuclear war. Christians all over the world must work for disarmament and the destruction of nuclear weapons.
