I will delight in God’s law

Psalm 119.16 I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

David finishes the eight verses that start with beth in a wonderful way. This essence is largely about the joy he finds in the word of God. Now he tells how he rejoices in God's statutes. He says that he finds joy in all the laws of God and does not want to forget to walk in his words.

What the Psalmist says is permeated with confidence and joy. The great thing is that he ties this joy to God's statutes and ordinances. We live in a culture where commandments, statutes, rules, ordinances, law, and regulations do not arouse special joy, quite the contrary. We live in a culture where following our own heart, our own thoughts and desires is seen as the best way of life. It is a matter of realizing oneself. Happiness is the optimal freedom to do as one himself wants. This postmodern attitude is far from biblical, and no one will find true joy in that way.

Unfortunately, among many Christians there is also an aversion to anything that tastes law or regulation. Some believes that to live under grace is to be set free from God's law and holy ordinances. How mistaken they are! May the Lord have mercy on us and allow us to rejoice in God's statutes..

"Your regulations are my desire and my joy." That is a fantastic statement and for David it was so. He delighted in God's ordinances! What a pure and good delight!

It is this joyful adherence to the word of God that I want to convey through this passage of Psalm 119. The entire psalm is permeated with trust and joy in the law of the Lord.

We want to restore a trusting and joyful attitude to the Bible and everything God says to us today through this holy book. We must learn to have our desire and joy in the Word of God. We must learn to enjoy ourselves in God's statutes. Then we can boldly proclaim the word of God for salvation and liberation.

Of course, when we delight in the law of the Lord, we do not forget the word of God. When we find our joy in the Word, it is easy to walk in his way and do what he wants. It is difficult to forget what we find our desire and joy in.

Unfortunately, many Christians may forget the word of God. Many forget to take nourishment from the Word through daily Bible reading and prayer. If we do not have good habits in being quiet before God and relying on His Word, it is easy to forget what the Word says. If we do not examine the Word and memorize the Bible, it is easy to forget the Word of God. Then minds and thoughts are easily influenced by secular and materialistic thinking.

The safest thing we can do is to delioght ourselves in the Word because it will keep us on track and give us great joy as we walk in God's way.

“My delight is found in your laws, and i won’t forget to walk in your words.”
