We always thank God

We always thank God when we pray for you! This is the way the apostle Paul is beginning his letter to the Colossians. He heard of their faith in Christ, their love for all the saint, and their hope because of the Gospel. The good news about the Kingdom of God has reached them through Epaphras, Paul's fellow servant and minister on his behalf among the Colossians which Paul had never met, and it is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world as well as in the Colossians.

We always thank God when we pray for you! Then Paul is going on to say that he continually prays for the believers in Colossae. He is always giving thank for the people of God, and he is continually praying for them. He is asking God to fill them with knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding the Spirit gives. The purpose of his prayers for the people of God is that they may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way.
God is finding great joy in the covenant community when it is

  • bearing fruit in every good work
  • growing in the knowledge of God
  • being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might.

so  that they may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father.
When Pauls is describing the Spirit filled life he is saying it is characterized by singing and making music from your heart to the Lord. The Spirit filled people will always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
