In my blog I am sharing from my heart and sometimes I am “thinking loudly” and even inviting my friends to “think loudly” with me and reason together and learn from one another. This entry and my previous entry "Don’t talk too much" are this kind of loud thinking or wondering and asking for insight from fellow disciples of the Lord. Therefore I am thanking every person that leaves a comment on my blog. The comments and questions enrich the blog.
I have had 3 comments on my entry “Don’t talk to much.” Elwyn was amazed at this question I have raised. He was quite challenged and provoked by it! And he is asking me to explain what I am actually saying.
Here are the provocative words:
I came across a verse in the Bible saying that too much talk fosters sin. I wonder if too much blogging or too much prophesying falls into the same category?
The background for this provocative question is this sentence that I felt the Lord dropped into my heart: "The silence of a prophet of the Lord speaks much louder than the prophecies of one thousand ordinary prophets." As I was meditating on the meaning of this I came across Proverbs 10:19 in my daily Bible reading. Immediately the question I raise in my blog came to my mind and I put it out for fellow believers to test it. I also quoted a lot of Bible verses on speaking or keeping silence. . In this entry I am actually only raising a provocative question or I am airing a wondering and hoping for input from brothers or sisters in the Lord.
When I teach or preach the word of God I am very conscious that I have to speak the Word of God into people’s life. But when I want to know what other people think I normally ask questions.
When I am blogging I am not suggesting that everything I write is the Word of the Lord. I don’t pretend to speak for God in everything I comment on. I am not God. I am a man. I am limited in so many ways. My insight and understanding are very limited. But I love God and I love his Word, – and I love to learn and grow in wisdom and understanding.
Therefore I invite everybody who read my blog to leave a comment. I like dialogue. I like to reason together.
I think we can all agree that too much blogging easily can fall into the same category as too much talking, which fosters sin. The provocative element in my question must be if too much prophesying can fall into the same category.
According to my understanding of the teaching on the gift of prophesy in the New Testament, the prophetic utterances are not perfect but given in part and they can be mingled with human thoughts and opinions. Therefore every prophetic message must be tested by the others. Since that is the case, I wonder, if a person becomes too familiarised with prophesying, if he then is in the danger of diluting what he rightly hears from God and of mixing it with his own thoughts and opinions? I wonder if we can have too many prophetic words brought to us or a congregation that we are in danger of forgetting or neglecting what God is saying? I wonder if we sometimes can miss the Word of the Lord because of too many prophesies? I just wonder if it is possible to hear and hear and not hear because of the enormous amounts of words? I wonder if too much prophesying can foster the sin of neglecting the Word of God and not heeding what the Spirit is saying to the churches? I just wonder!
