The taste of India

As I was enjoying my Masala Chai the waiter at the hotel asked me why the foreigners were so fond of the Masala Chai, I had to think twice before I gave an answer. The first answer I game up with was simply that it is different. However, I was not pleased with that answer myself, so I had to think once more and came up with this one: We like Masala Chai because it is the taste of India! I love Masala Chai in all the many different tastes in which it comes, there is nothing like it. It is the taste of incredible India.

Of cause the taste of India cannot be captured in Masala Chai only. The taste of India is actually inexhaustible in its rich variety. Sweet pineapples, curry, sweet Lassi, chicken tikka, bazaars, dust, sweat, dalits, holy cows in the streets, traffic chaos, beggars, money changers, Taj Mahal, the Pink City – all these things and many more give India the incredible rich taste which cause us to return and return to explore more and more.
However, the best taste of India I find in the covenant community where people from so many casts, ethnic groups and backgrounds find together in friendship and love. The taste of real India I find in fellow-shipping the people of God. My Indian friends give me the best taste of India ever. Even Masala Chai can not compare to the excitement of friendship with Indian believers.

It’s not strange that Thomas, the apostel, would go to this rich country. I can imagine what was expected him when he came to India.
