Learning to cook

Since we returned from India I have to learn to do new things as I have to look after my dear wife. She has been looking after all the practical things in the house, such as cleaning, washing clothes, preparing food etc. At the moment she can do nothing but take rest in her bed. She even needs help to get out of the bed for  necessary visit to the rest room. I am doing my best to look after her, but I have a lot to learn – like learning to cook.

Yesterday, while I was preparing dinner, I suddenly realised that I had forgotten to make a sauce suitable to the dish. In a hurry I went through all the cupboards looking for packets of easy ready to make sauces. Eventually I found one packet of Bernaise Sauce. Quickly I read the instruction and carried it out. I hoped to be able to have the sauce ready at the same time as the rest of the dinner would be finished. As I was stirring the pan I wondered why the sauce was so thin. I took another look at the instruction, only to discover that instead of 0.5 dl I had put 5 dl of milk in the sauce. I panicked. What to do? This is a real crisis.

Again I went to the cupboards looking for something to help me out. Praise God! I found some corn thickener for brown sauces. I put in a lot of spoons as I was stirring the pan. Eventually I was able to get an acceptable thickness to the sauce. The yellow colour was gone. Even most of the Bernaise taste was gone. But at least I had sauce when the rest of the dinner was ready. I served the sauce as a special brand of sauce for this particular dish. Solveig seemed to enjoy the sauce, even though she was not able to identify what kind of sauce it was supposed to be.

Today I prepared salmon with boiled potatoes and steamed carrots. I have been taught that we need desert when we have fish for dinner. I found a box of canned pears and whipped some cream. I had to ask Solveig how much sugar I had to add when I was whipping the cream. When she told me the amount of sugar I knew I needed to add a little bit more, for I like the cream sweeter than what Solveig normally does. I was very pleased with the outcome. The cream was sweet, just like it has to be for a man of God. Even Solveig could enjoy the cream! God is so good!

He-he it’s not easy to cook when not use to it, special when you have a wife like Solveig, who is a splender foodmaker. Learning comes with practice!
I visit the church Kings Table International in Rovaniemi recently and the pastor, Steve Pittman, do always make the food there, and he is an expert in Mexican food. Before I left to Norway he gave me a T-shirt with this script on: “Taste and see that the Lord is good!” Ps.34.8
