God’s displeasure rests with those who think they know everything

Psalm 119:21 You rebuke the insolent, accursed ones, who wander from your commandments.

Earlier in this Psalm we have seen that the psalmist has an humble and teaCHable attitude. He longs for God and wants to gain insight into his commandments that he can live according to God's will. He is filled with joyful confidence in the Word of God. He bows to the judgments of the Lord and will obey his precepts. He is meditating on the blessings of obeying the law of the Lord.

This is the context to what he says in this verse. Now he looks at the opposite of longing for God. It is to be proud and independent. It is going our own way. It is to put oneself first and follow one’s own head, thoughts and desires. Throughout the Bible, such an attitude is condemned. The Bible says that God opposes the insolent and the arrogant, but the gentle and humble will receive grace.

To put oneself above the law of God is highest form of pride. People who do so are often rude in the way they speak about God and His words. God threatens to curse proud, arrogant and rude people. They have no bright future ahead. Cursing and not blessing await them.

Their overconfidence causes them to fall away from God's commandments. They speak down the word of God. They speak with contempt of the Bible, like an old and dismissed book. They do not care about God's laws, for they love to walk their own path and follow their own corrupted heart.

In his great love, God punishes them. He does not give them up. He finds no pleasure in destroying them. God wants to save and save them. Therefore, he punishes them and threatens to curse them. He wishes that they will repent and find salvation, as the Apostle Peter says:

It is not right, the summer believes that the Lord is late in fulfilling the promise. No, he is patient with dives and does not want anyone to get lost, but that everyone should reach the point of conversion (2 Pet 3: 9).

“Your displeasure rests with those who are arrogant, who think they know everything; you rebuke the rebellious who refuses your laws.” (TPT)
